Short answer: most carbon fiber trunk spoilers for Tesla mount with automotive double sided tape. Test fit, mark the position, clean the trunk lid with isopropyl alcohol, peel and place, press firmly, then let it cure for 72 hours before a car wash. Plan on 30 to 60 minutes. Check your part's product page for its install method, and follow any instructions in the box.
What you need
- Isopropyl alcohol, 70% or higher
- Two clean microfiber towels
- Painter's tape
- A helper (useful for lining up longer spoilers)
- Shade and a car between about 60 and 90 degrees F
Step by step
- Confirm the fit. Make sure the spoiler matches your model and year. Once the tape touches the paint, the part can't be returned. Not sure? See our Model Y fitment guide.
- Test fit without peeling anything. Set the spoiler on the trunk lid with the backing still on. Check that it follows the curve of the lid and sits centered.
- Mark the position. Put small strips of painter's tape on the lid at each end and at the center, right where the spoiler's edges sit.
- Clean the surface. Wipe the mounting area with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely. Wax, sealant, ceramic coating or road film will stop the tape from bonding.
- Peel the ends first. Pull back a few inches of backing at each end and fold the tabs out so you can grab them.
- Place it once. Line the spoiler up with your marks and set it down. Tape grabs on contact, so get it right the first time.
- Pull the rest of the backing. Hold the spoiler in place and slowly pull the backing tabs out.
- Press hard. Press along the full length for about 30 seconds. Pressure is what makes the bond.
- Let it cure. Skip car washes and high speed driving for at least 72 hours. Then remove the painter's tape marks.
Mistakes that make a spoiler peel
- Installing in the cold. Tape bonds poorly below about 60 degrees F. Do it in a garage or on a warm day.
- Skipping the alcohol wipe. This is the most common reason a spoiler lifts.
- Repositioning after contact. Pulling it off and resticking weakens the tape.
- Washing too soon. Give it the full 72 hours.
What about lips, skirts and diffusers?
Those parts mount to the bumper or rocker panels, may use screws or clips, and often mean working under the car. Most owners have a body shop install them. Our Install Guide covers each type.
